Next round of auction of commercial coal mine in January: Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi

New Delhi (Natural Energy News): According to the statement, a total of 35 coal mines were successfully auctioned in the last 10 phases of the auction, as only 14 blocks could start operations.

On November 12, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the Center is planning to go for the next round of auction of blocks in January, as well as appealed to the states to facilitate speedy operationalization of blocks in association with commercial mine allocators. According to the statement, a total of 35 coal mines were successfully auctioned in the last 10 phases of the auction, as only 14 blocks could start operations. "I appeal to the state governments to cooperate (with the successful allottees for auction of commercial coal mines)," Joshi said in an interview to PTI.

He said, "Allow 19 bidders who have been allocated blocks to operate the mines. The rest will also get confidence. So we have to create this kind of environment. Cooperation means that you (the state) have to (Allottees) should approve for the block first.… We seek cooperation from the state governments in relation to land acquisition, pollution control board.'

The minister further said that before the sale of the blocks started, the Jharkhand government was of the view that if the auction took place during COVID-19, more revenue would not be generated.

But on the contrary, he said that the Jharkhand government would get the highest revenue among all states, Rs 2,690 crore per year from auction centres.

Joshi said, "Revenue (from auction blocks) will come after one year. People will think about 30 years and participate in the coal auction. And you should not speak like that, but encourage others."

Jharkhand had earlier expressed apprehensions about the participation of the bidders during the auction. The minister also assured that global players would participate in the next round of the auction.

Joshi said that the recent auction of coal mines for commercial mining saw "fierce competition" and 19 blocks generated revenue of about Rs 7,000 crore every year and created more than 69,000 jobs. The auction of blocks for commercial mining has opened up the coal sector to private players.

He said that the auction of these mines created fierce competition and companies offered excellent premiums. Out of 38 mines auctioned, 19 mines were auctioned successfully.

Joshi had said that 42 companies participated in the auction, out of which 40 were private players. A total of 76 bids were received for 23 mines, of which 19 mines received two or more bids and were found eligible to open technical bids.

For the three mines, there were single bids. In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began the auction process of 41 coal blocks for commercial mining.

Some of the corporate giants who own blocks include Adani Enterprises, Vedanta, Hindalco Industries and Jindal Power.
