Indian utilities consider coal instead of energy storage - for renewable balance

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has specified how grid back-up capacity procurement will work for Indian power distribution companies. The regulations consider energy storage as part of only 51% of clean energy requirement, and instead of the use of coal - with a variable price tariff element - is required for evening supply.

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued guidelines to the power distribution companies on how to enter into tenders for allocating a mix of coal-fired and renewable energy generation capacity as back-up grid supply can go.

Under the scheme, the electricity price tariff offered by the developers of such hybrid facilities will have a quarter of their price index-linked to the price of domestic or imported coal, as determined by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission of the Central Unit - Disadvantages represented by the variable value of performance fossil fuels.
