First Solar Initiates Construction of 3.3 GW Solar Plant in India: Paving the Way for Innovation and Sustainability

Chennai, India (Natural Energy News): First Solar, the leading solar panel manufacturer in the United States, has initiated the construction of India's first fully vertically integrated solar plant in Tamil Nadu, southern India. With a remarkable annual nameplate capacity of 3.3 gigawatts (GW), this facility marks a significant leap in India's renewable energy landscape.

This groundbreaking factory not only manufactures First Solar's Series 7 solar panels, designed in the company's U.S. research and development centers for optimal performance in the Indian market, but it also houses India's inaugural solar panel recycling plant. What sets it apart globally is its distinction as the world's first net-zero water withdrawal solar factory.

Situated in a region with high baseline water stress, the factory is meticulously designed to minimize its impact on local water resources. It achieves this by exclusively utilizing tertiary-treated reverse osmosis water from the city's sewage treatment plant, ensuring that the entire production process relies on sustainable water sources. Notably, the factory is committed to zero wastewater discharge, aligning with stringent environmental standards.

The solar plant, employing approximately 1,000 people directly, not only contributes to India's renewable energy goals but also serves as an economic catalyst for the region. As the demand for clean energy solutions continues to rise globally, this initiative aligns with India's commitment to sustainable development.

The project, valued at $700 million, received substantial financial support from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which provided $500 million in financing. Scott Nathan, CEO of DFC, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in diversifying energy supply chains and fostering economic growth in both the United States and India.

This venture represents the sixth operational factory for First Solar, expanding its global manufacturing footprint across four countries: the United States, Malaysia, Vietnam, and now India. The company's strategic growth plan, amounting to $4.1 billion since 2020, positions First Solar as a key player in advancing solar technology and sustainable practices worldwide.

As First Solar pioneers innovation and sustainability in India, it reinforces the vital role of international collaboration in shaping the future of renewable energy.
